...where shadow will become solid and light will become void.

Film Noir

Film Noir (literally 'black film or cinema') was coined by French film critics who noticed the trend of how dark and black the looks and themes were of many American crime and detective films from the 1930's to the 1960's.

They were physically characterized by overly
dramatic cast shadows. Notice the example of the physical manifestation to the left: Mass and light were used to manipulate space and the idea of it.

The concept of the project was to take a special building built during the Film Noir era and renovate it into an even deeper, cerebrally more complex structure.

3D model of structure and exposed sidewalk violation. Morris Lapidus designed a store which relative to its surrounding neighbors is quite unique. Like Film Noir, the character of the glass-encased red wall is theatrical itself.

The original inner floors and walls were removed from the 3D model, leaving only select, significant pieces to the building: the red wall , window frames, accordion wall, stairs and railing. Next,a yellow light source was created to cast shadows from the remaining select pieces onto four new walls A B C & D. As we see in  the image, left, the shadows cast on the slanted blue wall D were used as an outline; ...where shadow will become solid and light will become void.

RIGHT:
The relationship between the light source and the void, at the top of the structure become a contradiction when leaving the boundaries of the new walls; where light becomes solid and shadow becomes void by means of a u-shaped ramp - which terminates as an observation ledge at a gallery room.

Three of the four Film Noir walls can be seen here, on the left, flanking the perimeter atrium. The original upper storage room was reintegrated to create a bridge back to the red wall - which is out of frame on the right hand side of the image. Navigating one's way in-between the Film Noir walls, on each floor, engages one physically; where, moreover, the effect of shadows on space are no longer so easily dismissed.
